How Easy is It to Get Promoted in the Va

VA (Department of Veterans Affairs)

The United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any nation in the world. This benefits system traces its roots back to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony. The establishment of the Veterans Administration came in 1930 when Congress authorized the President to "consolidate and coordinate Government activities affecting war veterans."

This forum also includes the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

I am getting ready to start a position I've obtained with the VA and am curious as to whether they are promotion friendly. My position is a full performance level 9. When I prove that I am a good, loyal employee, what are my chances for obtaining an 11 position after 1 year? I would appreciate any input. Thanks :)

Many VA positions have a built-in career ladder progression.  Some areas in my VA organization start out at GS-5, then the incumbent moves up to GS-6 after 12 months then GS-7 in another 12 months.

My 2210 position started out as GS-9 and I just got bumped up to GS-11 and will get GS-12 next year.

Both scenarios don't require anything of the incumbent other than a satisfactory performance rating.

The VA is a large agency and there should be opportunities for advancement/promotion in many locales.

There is quite a bit of room for advancement in the VA, I think its probably one of the best agencies where you can move up pretty quickly.

The VA is one of the most respectable agencies in the federal government. They look to higher honorable veterans all the time and I have always admired that. If you are a honorable veteran you should look to work at the VA and support there mission to help other honorable veterans.

It's a lot easier to find a promotion if you are willing to relocate - you might want to keep that in mind.  Where I work its taken me 11 years to go from a GS 5/7 position to a GS11 because, besides my current city / VAMC, there is only one other location that I would consider moving to.  So I had to be content to wait...  my granny always told me patience is a virtueGeek

To clarify, the VBA side (benefits) of the VA seems more promotion friendly than the VHA side (hospitals).

Now that I have worked here for a couple of months, I see how everything works here. I appreciate those of you who have given me valuable advice! I thoroughly enjoy working here and have learned a tremendous amount of information regarding federal staffing/recruiting!

Yes, the VA is very promotion friendly and they will post many new internal positions which you may apply for if you have enough experience. From what I have observed as a VSR - the best way to ensure promotion is to a) meet production, b) zero errors, c) sign up for any leadership or mentoring positions, and d) show up for work on time and stay on task. That will put you way ahead of the curve.
